Ethiopian black banana Ensete ventricosum 'Maurelii'
is a tender, evergreen perennial banana with large, upright leaves. They have dark red stalks, and are tinged red on the upper surface, especially round the edges.
Best grown in full sun (shade from the midday sun) to partial shade outside in summer, in a south or west facing aspect, ideally a sheltered spot of out of winds and brought in to a frost free greenhouse or conservatory for the winter, put outside again after the last frosts have gone.
Liquid feed well in the summer months, water sparingly in winter. Regular watering and feeding will produce a large stem with fat wide red foliage.
