Hostas are eternally popular, not only because of the decorative nature of their foliage, but because of their growth habit. The shapely leaves arrange themselves well on the plants and are held almost horizontally, creating a shapely canopy over the ground. With such subtle colouration, from grey-green to emerald, and with a vast variety of different variegations available, it is hardly surprising that they have such a wide use in gardens.
Hostas are fully hardy, most prefer part to full shade and rich, moist but well drained neutral soil. However varieties like Aureomarginata will tolerate full sun.
They form large clumps that are excellent for ground cover. Mass planting produces the most effective results. Can be grown in containers with adequate watering.
Slug and snail control is essential. Can be ground a containers with adequate watering.
