Golden Crookstem Bamboo, Zig-zag Bamboo.
Phyllostachys aureo-sulcata Aureocaulis A cousin of Spectabilis, so performs well in the garden. Canes are lemon to golden yellow, with canes facing the sun turning a nice burnt orange to red colour. Occasionally the canes zig-zag!
It makes an excellent specimen plant or screen and is very hardy to -20oC when planted in the ground.
Pruning: It can be pruned to your desired height at the end of July when the new stems have sprouted and uncurled it's new leaves. Prune just above a leaf-joint. Easily reaches 3-4 metres tall with no pruning.
In time, for example in the summer of the third year after planting the lower foliage and thin stems can be trimmed off to better show off the lovely stems. This in time encourages the plant to produce thicker stems.
We recommend growing Golden Croostem bamboos in either large pots, they prefer short fat containers or troughs. They also do very well in enclosed raised beds. If you wish to grow them in the soil we recommend using a plastic root barrier to ensure the roots only grow in the areas you want them to. Generally, Golden bamboos clump-form for a number of years, but after this when they have filled the area you have given them they will want to spread and look for new soil. Bamboos can be easily controlled be annual pruning (removal) of any unwanted stems, this is usually done between May and July. If you need more bamboo care advise do please call or email us.
