Daphne odora Aureomarginata.
This is one of our favourite garden plants as it is one of the first scented flowering plants to flower in early Spring. The scent is strong and lily-like and with its evergreen leaves with golden margin makes it a perfect garden plant.

This evergreen shrub is named after a character in Greek mythology, one that has often featured in art, literature and opera. Daphne was a naiad, a beautiful nymph, who like many others caught the attention of Apollo. He made chase. Just before he caught her she appealed for help from her father, the river god Ladon, who duly turned her into a laurel tree.

Daphne odora, which comes from China and Japan was introduced into this country in 1771.

When mature it is not detrimental to snip the odd piece off and bring inside to bring the scent inside to fill the house with this magical lily-like scent.

Best planted near the house or on the pathway to the house to enjoy the fragrance of the flowers.

Flowering time: January to March (depending on weather) Pale pink flowers open from purple-pink buds, dark green leaves with yellow margins.

Garden care: They dislike root disturbance, so should not be moved once established. Where necessary after flowering, very lightly trim to remove misplaced branches and to maintain a compact habit.

Position: full sun or partial shade.

Soil: moderately fertile, well-drained, humus-rich soil.
Rate of growth: slow-growing.
Hardiness: Hardy when planted in the ground and mulched annually. Not hardy if container grown, therefore bring inside / protect, as very hard frosts on the roots are liable to kill them. In spite of their wonderful scent do not be fooled into thinking all is palatable, the whole plants is toxic if eaten.
Eventual Height: 1.5m Eventual Spread: 1.5m in 8-10 years.
Suggested Plant Uses: City / Courtyard Gardens, Cottage / Informal Garden, Flowers Borders and Beds, Low Maintenance, Patio/Container Plants or Wall-side Borders.
