Chocolate Vine Akebia quinata is a fast-growing hardy, semi-evergreen flowering oriental vine with deep purple-chocolate flower clusters in late spring and dark green foliage that lasts through until autumn.
Its vigorous, twining habit and drought tolerance make it an ideal choice for vertical gardens and privacy screens.
It may be grown through a substantial tree, trained up a pergola or to wires on a wall (see photo). Tolerant of most aspects but particularly reliable against cool and shady walls. Requires well prepared soil to establish, preferably a rich, moisture-retentive loam.
Will reach 3m after 3 years and eventually 10m if not pruned.
Enjoy its deep vanilla chocolate flavour in summer desserts or as a unique addition to savoury dishes.
