Ophiopogon planiscapus 'Nigrescens' syn. 'Kokuuryu' is a hardy evergreen perennial to 20cm, forming dense tufts of arching, narrowly strap-shaped, leathery black leaves 20-30cm in length. Racemes of small purplish flowers, followed by glossy black berries.
This unusual plant looks fantastic if planted under bamboo (see photo 2), also looks great grouped in tubs or planted into gravel, and it provides a brilliant contrast to black or green stem bamboos!
