Pseudosasa japonica aka Arundinaria japonica, Bambusa japonica Metake.
Is a hardy vigorous and tough, evergreen bamboo to 4m in height, forming a thicket of green canes with copious narrow, shiny green leaves to 25cm in length.
Cultivation: Grow in a fertile, moist but well-drained soil in sun or partial shade. To maintain vigour apply a balanced fertiliser at least once each growing season.
We recommend growing Arrow bamboos in either large pots, they prefer short fat containers or troughs. They also do very well in enclosed raised beds. If you wish to grow them in the soil we recommend using a plastic root barrier to ensure the roots only grow in the areas you want them to. Generally, Arrow bamboos clump-form for a number of years, but after this when they have filled the area you have given them they will want to spread and look for new soil. Bamboos can be easily controlled be annual pruning (removal) of any unwanted stems, this is usually done between May and July. If you need more bamboo care advise do please call or email us.
Pruning: Remove spent stems and thin to show canes to best effect.
Soil: Acid, Alkaline or Neutral. Moist but well-drained or well-drained. Clay, Loam or Sand.
Aspect: East, West or South facing. Exposed or Sheltered.
Metake will tolerate being planted in shady areas.
