Hellebores Lenten Rose Helleborus orientalis
Helleborus orientalis, commonly known as Lenten Rose, is a semi-evergreen perennial prized for its elegant, cup-shaped flowers in soft pink with prominent yellow stamens. Blooming from February to April, these pendent blooms provide early-season colour when few other plants flower. The clump-forming plant features deeply divided, leathery dark green foliage on branched stems, creating attractive ground cover beneath deciduous trees and shrubs. Supplied in 2-3 litre pots, these specimens are ready to establish. Hellebores thrive in dappled shade and prefer heavy, neutral to alkaline soil. Semi-evergreen in milder regions, they may lose foliage in colder climates but will reliably return each spring.
Flowers will all appear from February to April. They make attractive ground cover plants for areas of dappled shade under deciduous trees and shrubs and they prefer a heavy, neutral to alkaline soil.
This perennial is semi-evergreen so it can lose some of its leaves in winter. In colder regions or more exposed gardens, it may lose them all, but then fresh new growth appears again in spring.
Prefers partial shade and free-draining soil or compost.
Hardy Perennial (H4 -10°C to -5°C)
