Fishpole bamboo Phyllostachys aurea
A most graceful bamboo, forming large clumps 2.5-3.5m (8-11ft) high. The canes are green at first, maturing to a dull yellow in full sun.
There is sometimes a curious swelling beneath each joint.
If you wish to grow it in a container, a minimum of a half-barrel size will be needed. Water and feed well during the summer months.
Soil: Acid, Alkaline or Neutral. Moist but well-drained or well-drained. It is very robust in dealing well with sandy soil, salt laden air and to some extent very wet locations providing it is not permanently waterlogged.
Aspect: West or South facing. Sheltered out of the wind. Full sun to partial shade.
We recommend growing Aurea bamboos in either large pots, they prefer short fat containers or troughs. They also do very well in enclosed raised beds. If you wish to grow them in the soil we recommend using a plastic root barrier to ensure the roots only grow in the areas you want them to. Generally, Aurea bamboos clump-form for a number of years, but after this when they have filled the area you have given them they will want to spread and look for new soil. Bamboos can be easily controlled be annual pruning (removal) of any unwanted stems, this is usually done between May and July. If you need more bamboo care advise do please call or email us.
